Step by step process

Driver's license process

Step 1

Apply for a provisional license via the DVLA.

To begin your journey towards obtaining a full UK driving license, you’ll first need to apply for a provisional driving license. You can apply for this online on the GOV.UK website or by filling out a D1 application form from the Post Office.

Step 2

Start your lessons to be test ready!

Once you have your provisional license, you can start taking driving lessons with a qualified driving instructor. During these lessons, you’ll learn the skills and knowledge you need to pass your driving test.

Step 3

Prepare for and pass your theory test.

Before you can take your practical driving test, you’ll need to pass a theory test. This test consists of multiple-choice questions and a hazard perception test, which assesses your ability to identify and respond to potential hazards on the road.

Step 4

Book and pass your practical test.

Once you’ve passed your theory test, you can book your practical driving test. During this test, you’ll be assessed on your driving skills and ability to follow the rules of the road. If you pass, you’ll be issued with a full UK driving license.

Step 5

Complete the Pass Plus course.

After passing your practical driving test, you may want to consider taking the Pass Plus course. This course is designed to help new drivers improve their driving skills and confidence on the road.

Step 6

Renew your driving license after 10 years.

Your full UK driving license is valid for 10 years, after which you’ll need to renew it. You’ll receive a reminder from the DVLA when your license is due for renewal.

How to Become A Qualified Driving Instructor?

Step 1

Obtain a Provisional Instructor License (PDI)

Before you can start teaching, you must apply for a Provisional Driving Instructor Licence (PDI). This licence allows you to begin your training and start teaching students under supervision, focusing on practical driving instruction.

Step 2

Pass the 3 Part ADI Tests

The path to becoming a fully qualified instructor involves passing three Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) tests, including:

  • ADI Part 1: Tests your knowledge of driving theory, traffic signs, and road procedures.
  • ADI Part 2: Assesses your driving ability, hazard perception, and ability to avoid driving faults.
  • ADI Part 3: Evaluates your instructional ability during real lessons, ensuring you can effectively teach driving skills to others.
